The brothers Gerhard and Wolfgang Schmack founded the company GEDIS mbH & Co. KG with the vision of raising the automation of building material mixing plants to a new level in technology and support. The development of hardware and software, based on the then available microprocessor technology was the core of the activities. As a result of the production of a self-sufficient programmable logic controller (PLC) and a dosing computer specially developed for the application of building material mixing technology, the first EPROM system was delivered in August 1991: GDS-8 Plus with a control terminal making process visualisation possible.
GEDIS CONTROL SYSTEMS
GEDIS mbH & Co. KG, also known as “GEDIS CONTROL SYSTEMS“, was founded in May 1991, and has been involved for more than 25 years in the development, manufacture, delivery and maintenance of control systems for building material mixing plants (with a focus on concrete production). High quality, reliable control systems, service and customer satisfaction for our customers in Germany and abroad have been the focus and the basis for our success until now. Our company has a broad portfolio and immense experience in the development, design and production of automation systems for mixing technology. Through flexibility combined with quality and balanced value for money, we have become one of the leading suppliers in Germany and abroad for control, dosing and scheduling systems.
History an Milestones of our company
GEDIS mbH & Co. KG has more than 25 years of experience in developing, designing and manufacturing automation systems for mixing technology. By continuous growth in different markets, the initially regional company has been transformed into an international company with more than 700 control systems installed and currently in-progress in 25 countries.
1991
1992-1995
With the creation of its own software department, the foundation was laid for the development of the system IBS33 (DOS), based for the first time on standardised industrial PC technology. Customer requirements in the area of interfaces to billing, laboratory and scheduling systems as well as the precise documentation and statistical evaluation of the production data could therefore be fully implemented. The result was a complete range of solutions for electronic process control tasks in the building materials industry. A large and loyal customer base quickly developed within Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The high demand for mixing plants in the new Federal states, due to the reunification of Germany, made a quick establishment of the company in the market possible.
1995-2000
As the company evolved steadily and established itself in the German and Austrian markets, the Schmack brothers tested the opportunities of their start up in further target markets within Europe and after a market analysis started with the delivery and installation of control systems to Poland. A milestone for this was the founding of a Polish representation in Katowice with the aim of being able to adapt the products and system solutions to the market requirements and customer needs. This affected both the service and the software itself. The control system was now also available in English and Polish language version.
Croatia, Bosnia and Greece were to be followed by other countries. The “crisis in the building sector” in 1996, with sales slumps of 80% in the German market, was compensated not least by the strategically sound decision to expand into European markets. Parallel to the day-to-day business, the company was already working on a Windows-based solution starting in 1995. The system IBS33W was created and at first was successfully installed at the end of 1996 on the operating system Microsoft Windows NT. Already at the end of 1996, the hardware and software development of a CAN-BUS-based programmable logic controller (PLC) began. The product was ready for the market in 1999 and was first delivered. The system IBS33W, installed on the operating system Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 2000 later Windows XP, in connection with the newly developed CAN-BUS based PLC allowed it at an early stage to dispense with the previously very expensive and costly manual control panels. Operation by mouse on the screen was made possible. Equipped with modern, innovative, self-developed and market driven complete systems, new markets could be opened up. In the year 2000, the company was also able to acquire the Romanian market for the first time. The agile and flexible way of working that GEDIS stands for made it possible for the IBS33W controller to be put into operation in a very short time with the Romanian language and the country specific requirements. Together with our longtime customers, we carried out control conversions of existing and complete installations of new plants (Delivery: electrical installation, power unit and control). From this point on, we have been able to continue, expand and intensify this successful cooperation to the present day.
2001-2005
In 2001, the company celebrated its 10th anniversary. The sector specific solutions and the ideas developed have decisively advanced and shaped concrete production.
In 2003, the North office was set up for sales and service in northern Germany and the first exports to northern and western Europe (Finland/Netherlands). Two years later, the installation of a new concrete mixing plant for the production of core and decorative concrete for paving stone production in Vilnius / Lithuania followed.
This continuous development of the IBS33W application made it possible to use this process control system for both ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete plants and to cover technologically the entire product range of concrete mixing plant technology. Expansion into the Arab world was made possible through participation in the BIG5 Exhibition in Dubai in 1999 and the first delivery of control systems to Saudi Arabia in November 2001. Deliveries to Kuwait and Qatar took place from 2004 onward. One year later, the first deliveries of the control system IBS33W to the Ukraine took place.
2006-2010
A special event in 2006 was the delivery of a GEDIS control system IBS33W for a ready-mixed concrete mixing plant in the city of MECCA in western Saudi Arabia (with the sanctuary of the Kaaba the central place of pilgrimage of Islam).
With the good cooperation with the customer’s engineers, the system was put into operation by means of “remote service”. In the years from 2006 to 2009, the 5 storey Jamarat Bridge (pilgrimage site of the Muslims during the annual Hajj / construction sum of 1.2 billion USD) was built using the concrete production of the IBS33W system.
Thanks to the powerful and enormously robust process control systems, the fast, uncomplicated and reliable support, as well as the multi-language, innovative and cost efficient execution of the control systems, GEDIS customers also enjoyed the usual successful cooperation as part of the extended activities in Northern and Eastern Europe. Deliveries to Norway, Ukraine and Georgia followed.
Above all, this rapid, excellent export development has made the company since its founding within the concrete industry into a sought-after and reliable supplier of control systems for concrete production and related products.
2010-2015
Due to low investment activity in the building materials industry in Europe after the 2008 financial crisis, between 2009 and 2012, mainly existing mixing plant control systems were modernised and partially expanded. GEDIS stands for individual technical development, know-how and constructive dialogue with its customers and partners.
The close cooperation with a manufacturer of mobile mixing plant concepts from 2013 opened up further markets in Russia, Belgium and England.
From 2011, the integration of safety technology followed within the meaning of the Machinery Directive 2006 / 42EG. As a system integrator, GEDIS introduced a high performance, certified safety system for all hazard areas within the plants. Retrofitting of existing plants and initial equipping of new plants make no difference here.

2019 - Today
Through internal projects such as the modernisation of the headquater, the digitalisation of processes, the new recruiting process and the associated optimisation of service and project work, we were able to further improve our product quality. And the associated optimisation of service and project work, we have been able to further increase our product quality. The company continues to develop steadily and is in a healthy growth process. Our appearances at Bauma2019 and Bauma2022 were a success. We were able to Iceland and Lithuania, and existing business relationships were cultivated and expanded.
The continuous and market-driven development of our product portfolio is the basis for a good and cooperative partnership with our customers at home and abroad.
